Reports prior to the Galaxy S6 announcement suggested the device and its curved display variant could easily exceed $1,000 in price. Luckily, for the Galaxy S6 at least, that may not be the case. The 32GB base model Galaxy S6 should sell for 699 euros, the tech website SamMobile said.
This is a price hike from the 650-euro initial price of the base model Galaxy S5 in Europe, but it’s not as bad as the 749-euro starting price rumors suggested. The price converted to dollars, would be $781; however, it is likely the Galaxy S6 would cost $699 in the U.S., similar to t
he Galaxy S5 selling for $650 when it launched last April.
This is the first time that a Galaxy S smartphone has had 32GB of internal storage as its base model; previous models started a 16GB of internal storage. Samsung also introduced a new storage capacity -- 128GB -- for it top-end model.
However, the increase in storage capacity is only one possible source of the price hike. Samsung stuffed several new features into the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, including a metal design, a curved display on both sides and wireless charging, to name a few.
The 64GB Galaxy S6 model should sell for 799 euros while the 128GB model should sell for 899 euros.
The Galaxy S6 Edge should be quite expensive, as expected. Prior rumors accurately predicted its possible pricing at 849 euros for the 32GB model, 949 euros for the 64GB model, and 1,049 euros for the 128GB model. This isn’t surprising considering that the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge sold for $950 when it launched last October.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will be available April 11 in 20 countries, with availability to other markets coming later.
U.S carriers T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and U.S. Cellular have already confirmed they will offer the Galaxy S6, having opened information sign-up pages for the device prior to its announcement. Cricket Wireless also announced Sunday it will offer the Galaxy S6.
Meanwhile, check out Samsung’s first post-announcement promotion for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
