Sony Unveils Ultra HD Action Cam to Take on GoPro

Sony Corp. (6758) unveiled an ultra high definition action camera as it challenges GoPro Inc. (GPRO) in the market for filming extreme sports and offers a broader range of products using 4K video.
A new camcorder and television that is thinner than its Xperia smartphones were among other 4K products unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The format has a resolution of about four times that of high-definition models.
Chief Executive Office Kazuo Hirai led the company’s presentation at CES as it seeks to move past the embarrassing hacking on the company’s Hollywood studio, an attack he described as “vicious and malicious.” Sony is developing more 4K content to help drive customer adoption of the technology, filming popular shows from its production unit including “The Blacklist” and “Masters of Sex” in the format.
“4K will continue to be an important area of development and distinction for
Sony,” Hirai said. “Looking at what’s currently in production or has recently wrapped, we’re seeing a fantastic rate of adoption of our 4K capability among our Sony Pictures colleagues.”
Other Sony-produced shows to use the 4K format include “The Night Shift,” which airs on Comcast Corp.’s NBC network, and “The Goldbergs” on Walt Disney Co.’s (DIS) ABC.

Android Televisions

All of Sony’s Web-connected TVs will this year run on Google Inc.’s Android platform with the company planning models from 43 inches to 75 inches. The X900C TV is just 0.2 inches deep at its thinnest point, the company said.
Demonstration models of Sony’s new 4K Action Cam were handed to skateboard legend Tony Hawk to test them on the ski slopes. The camera was also mounted underneath his board at a skate park, something he said wasn’t possible with other products.
“I had a blast with those cameras,” Hawk said from the stage at the Sony event. “I’ve never been able to get shots like that before.”
GoPro has more than doubled since its initial public offering in June on demand for the tiny video cameras that adventurers strap onto their bodies to record their exploits. Jeff Brown, a spokesman for the San Mateo, California-based company, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours.
Other products unveiled by Sony today include the SmartWatch 3, with its own built in GPS; the Walkman NW-ZX2, with high-resolution audio; and the Smart B-Trainer headset for runners.
Hackers broke into its computer system Nov. 24 and later released thousands of documents including credit card information, social security numbers and health records of Sony employees, in an attack that the U.S. called a North Korean reprisal for the film, “The Interview.” Sony canceled the film’s initial release before reaching a deal to show the movie at more than 300 theaters in North America and release it online through Google’s Play and Apple Inc.’s iTunes.
