Update: Xbox users can now sign into Xbox Live. Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment on the outage.
Original story: Xbox Live is down for most
users, and Microsoft Corp. appears unsure of what exactly is wrong with
its gaming network. Owners of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 game consoles
are have been unable to sign into Xbox Live since before 2 p.m. EST. on
Wednesday.
Microsoft said
that it was “working hard to look into problems connecting to Xbox
Live.” In previous outages, the company has said that it was working to
restore the service, indicating it knew what was wrong. The company’s
Xbox Support team’s responses to
the current Xbox Live outage seem to
show that the company doesn't know the cause of the current issues with
signing into the service.
This is the first major Xbox Live service interruption of 2015, following a high-profile outage last month. Taking more than 24 hours to
fix, that outage began on Christmas day and was caused by the notorious
hackers calling themselves Lizard Squad. Xbox Live also was down two
times for extended periods in Nov. 2014.
The Xbox Support team referred Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners to a website dedicated
to Xbox Live network troubles. This story will be updated with any
updates to Xbox Live’s status or responses from Microsoft.
