Jozef Oleksy, Poland’s prime minister from 1995 to 1996, died of cancer today, Dariusz Jonski, spokesman for the opposition Democratic Left Alliance party, said by phone. He was 68.
Oleksy, an official of Poland’s ruling communist party before the regime change in 1989, stepped down as prime minister in February 1996 after being accused of spying for Russia. Polish prosecutors later dropped the investigation after failing to produce evidence backing the allegations.
Oleksy also served as parliament speaker and interior minister, among other roles. He was among the founders of the Democratic Left Alliance and served as its deputy chairman until his death. Oleksy is survived by his wife and two children.
