South Africa allows for some prisoners to be released under correctional supervision after fulfilling one-sixth of their sentence. Pistorius was eligible to
be released on house arrest in August, but the parole board in Pretoria had postponed the decision and referred the matter back to a lower board, according to CNN.
Pistorius was charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, South African model Reeva Steenkamp, who was found shot to death in February 2013. The athlete admitted that he did fire the shots that killed Steenkamp through a bathroom door but said he thought he was firing the shots at a home invader.
A judge acquitted Pistorius of murder, but found him negligent in Steenkamp’s death. Prosecutors have said the judge did not apply the law correctly in his ruling, and they are trying to appeal the court’s decision on Pistorius. The next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 3.
