Leading mobile telecommunications provider, MTN will be forced to its knees as the group’s about 900 national workforce goes on strike today.
The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has confirmed the industrial action would go ahead after negotiations to resolve the impasse collapsed.
The union representing a portion of MTN Group Limited -2.73% workers is demanding a 10 per cent salary raise for its members and four per cent in bonuses.
According to media reports, the union’s Clyde Mervin warned that the strike was going to have a massive impact.
“If the company wants to come to the table, we are very clear that we are willing to talk to any one of the MTN leadership if they want to address this matter prior to
the strike but we are ready, it’s all systems go for the Communication Workers Union,” Mervin told the Eyewitness News.

However, MTN’s chief human resources manager Themba Nyathi told CNBC Africa that the group had made contingency plans.
“We have contingencies in place to make sure operations are not affected negatively,” said Nyathi adding that allegations being made by the CWU were inaccurate.
