South Africa's headline consumer inflation quickened to 4.5 per cent year-on-year in April, slightly below expectations, from four per cent in March, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Wednesday.

On a month-on-month basis, prices were up 0.9 per cent in April compared with 1.4 per cent previously.
Core inflation, which excludes the prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages, petrol and energy, was slower at 5.6 per cent year-on-year versus 5.7 per cent, and at 0.3 per cent month-on-month from 1.1 per cent.
