VENTURES AFRICA –
Earlier today, news reports suggested that sportswear giants Adidas had
decided to suspend their kit sponsorship deal with the Nigerian Super
Eagles following the controversial events that have seen the sacking of
the entire board of the Nigerian Football Federation.
However, latest developments indicate that
the German firm is yet to make a decision as regards discontinuing their
contracts. According to reports from SuperSport,
Adidas have confirmed that the contract, along with its terms and
duration, remains ‘unchanged’. . According to the report, the kit
manufacturers also indicated that the situation with the board of the
NFF was being ‘closely monitored’.
“We are monitoring the situation very closely
and are in ongoing discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation.
Our contract remains unchanged at this time,” Adidas Group Corporate
Communication Manager, Lars Mangels is reported as saying.
Also corroborating the position of Adidas,
NFF Assistant Director (Communications) Mr. Ademola Olajire has
confirmed that the governing body has not received any news of a
suspension or cancellation of the current kit deal with Adidas.
With FIFA stating that the Nigerian national team risks a ban if the banned board of the NFF is not reinstated on or before Tuesday, July 8,
it appears that there could be more developments around Nigerian
football and specifically the Super Eagles who have a number of
high-profile corporate sponsors including Globacom, Guinness, Malta
Guinness, Peak Milk and Tom-Tom.
Following the recent commercial boom of the
Super Eagles brand, the news of a possible ban will not be met with
smiles at many corporate headquarters in Lagos and Abuja, the commercial
nerve centers of the country.
