AccessKenya To Link More Kenyans With $3.3m Fibre Expansion

AccessKenya
VENTURES AFRICA – Internet Service Provider, AccessKenya Group, says it plans to invest Sh300 million ($3.3 million) into expanding its fibre coverage of Mombasa, Thika and Nairobi over the next year.
“Our interest is in helping businesses grow by delivering affordable but critical end-to-end solutions for enterprises and even smaller companies,” Business Daily quoted Jonathan Somen, AccessKenya Chief Executive, as saying.
The internet provider was delisted from the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) after South African IT services company, Dimension Data Holdings, completed a 100 percent stake acquisition in January this year.
The investment is also expected to grow its cloud service offerings. According to Somen, AccessKenya will offer cloud solutions and managed services that require
high speed connectivity to data centres across Kenya. “All our fiber installations are future proofed with capabilities to traffic massive data rates of up to 2Gbps if necessary,” Somen explained.
Kenyans have in recent times opted for fibre connectivity due to its reliability and speed. It is becoming very popular among corporate bodies. This development encouraged AccessKenya to switch focus from servicing homes to corporates only.
According to the Communications Authority of Kenya’s ICT Sector Quarterly Statistical Report, AccessKenya had the third largest market share of fixed internet subscriptions in the country. It holds an 11.5 percent share, accounting for 11,360 subscribers in March 2014. Wananchi Telecom Limited leads the market with 44.7 percent share, followed by Liquid Telecom Limited with 17.8 percent.
