VENTURES AFRICA – Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of South Africa, on Monday called on South African businesses to hire first time workers and provide training and real management backing to these young employees. South Africa has almost 35 percent unemployment rate and more than 15 percent of these are the youth.
South African businesses have often been accused of not appointing young employees because they lacked work experience.
“If given proper support and direction, employers will discover that the energy and enthusiasm of these young people can be harnessed to improve the
effectiveness of their business,” Fin24 quoted Ramaphosa as having told delegates attending a Youth Employment Conference taking place on the Spier Wine Estate near Stellenbosch, situated in South Africa’s Western Cape Province.
“By broadening our labour pool, we will be able to stimulate growth in the economy and improve our competitiveness. To advance inclusive youth employment, we all need to play our part,” he continued.
Young South Africans want nothing more than an opportunity – a chance to work – so that they can break the inter-generational cycle of poverty, according to Ramaphosa.
Youth unemployment is an international problem. However, it is more rife in African states, Ramaphosa said. In Africa, the youth are in the majority, according to official figures.
Ramaphosa has been punted by many as South Africa’s next president but political analysts say the ANC lobbyists do not like him.
These lobbyists want Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who is the chairperson of the African Union Commission.
However, some South Africans believe that the Ramaphosa will make for a better president after Zuma, who has been hailed as South Africa’s most under performing president since the advent of democracy 20 years ago.
