Samsung, Safaricom Partner On New Smart TV

Samsung Africa
VENTURES AFRICA – Samsung has agreed a deal with Safaricom to have the mobile telecommunications giant provide 3G dongles for buyers of its Internet-enabled television sets in Kenya.
The telecoms company will offer the modems for free, while it in turn makes revenue from data usage of the Samsung Samrt TV users.
“At Samsung, the television is more than just a screen— it is a window to the world, providing new experiences, new discoveries and new possibilities,” Business Daily quoted Won Jin Lee, executive vice president of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics as saying.
The Korean electronics giant expects its
partnership with Safaricom to encourage Kenyans to buy and use the smart TV sets which are fitted with features such as Skype and YouTube.
According to Samsung, Skype will be available in December once an update on the U9000 TV Series is effected.
Lee assured customers of Samsung that with the smart TVs, they can enjoy more entertaining content, including game applications. He however said the game applications are currently available in limited countries.
Samsung is expected to join major tech companies from around the globe in Berlin this week for the IFA technology show where it will unveil Skype, games such as Golf Star, Need For Speed, Real Football 2014 as well as other new Smart TV content.
