State-owned Energy Firm Sinks $250m Into Mozambique’s Power Sector

VENTURES AFRICA – State-owned power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM) says it will invest $250 million to upgrade its power generation plants in Mozambique adding that most its equipment are now very old.
“The grid is severely deteriorated and is over 40 years old in the south of the country and over 50 years old in the central region and so we have to spend money on a new one,” said EdM chairman Augusto Fernando.
“In terms of figures I would say the city of
Maputo (capital city) alone needs $500 million and a similar amount for the rest of the country, so that the situation can be brought up to a minimum standard,” Fernando added.
EdM says it needs over $1 billion to provide adequate electricity to the Mozambican populace.
Mozambique has been hit by constant power cuts in the past recent months but the southern African country’s energy sector is attracting significant investment, beyond its much discussed large offshore gas discoveries. The Japanese government is to grant Mozambique a loan of $167 million to build a gas fired power station in Maputo.
