Five people were shot near a restaurant in Newport News, Virginia, late Tuesday night after a fight, according to local media. Authorities are reportedly investigating the incident, which took place outside the Deja Vu Restaurant and Lounge.
Police reportedly said that they responded to a call about shots being heard on Jefferson Avenue, and the incident was later upgraded to a shooting. Authorities also stated that there were no victims when police arrived at the scene, USA Today reported. One person has
been reportedly detained and is being questioned about the incident, but it was not clear if the person was involved in the shooting. A person who was at the restaurant at the time of the shooting revealed that he had heard nearly 20 shots being fired, Daily Press reported.
“At this time, we do not know if the victims were involved in the fight or if any of the victims fired any weapons,” Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, said according to a local report.
Police reportedly received information that three gunshot victims had arrived at a local hospital's emergency room. Officers were informed that a fourth victim was reportedly spotted near Crittenden Middle School and was later taken to a nearby hospital. Later, police stated that a fifth gunshot victim arrived at the Hampton VA Hospital before being transferred to another hospital.
Sgt. J.D. Jewell reportedly said that they had found several guns at the scene, while some vehicles had also been struck by gunfire. However, authorities reportedly said that all five victims had received what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
