China Incursions Don’t Augur Well for Good India Ties: Singh

China’s recent incursions into Indian territory don’t augur well for maintaining cordial relations between the two countries, Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.
“India wants to maintain good relations with its neighbors, but the gesture should be reciprocated by its neighbors,” Singh said yesterday in a Twitter posting. He was campaigning in the northern state of Jammu & Kashmir for the Bharatiya Janata Party before state elections.
Indian and Chinese troops engaged in a standoff in September in the border region of Ladakh. Border commanders from the two nations met Sept. 30 and ended the incident.
Tensions have simmered in the past few years over claims to disputed territory on the border. India accuses China of occupying 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) in Jammu & Kashmir, while Beijing lays claim to 90,000 square kilometers of land in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
“China has illegally occupied Aksai Chin,” Singh said. “India lost precious territory to China and Pakistan due to the wrong policies of the Congress,” he said, referring to the Congress party that led India’s government before elections this year that brought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP to power.
