The 27-year-old who plays for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana was reportedly killed at his girlfriend’s house in Gauteng. A man was said to have demanded his cellphone before opening fire.
“We have to brake (break) normal protocol. We can confirm that Bucs keeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot and sadly declared dead on arrival at hospital,” said the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) official Twitter feed.
“There were 7 people inside the house. Two suspects went into
the house, one remained outside. The 3 fled on foot after the shooting,” another tweet by SAPS read.
SAPS also confirmed that that the incident happened around 8pm South African time at Zamo Section, Vosloorus, Gauteng. A reward of R150,000 has been announced for anyone who can offer information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the evil act.
Meyiwa played what would be his last game for Orlando Pirtes on Saturday, when he helped the team defeat Ajax Cape Town 4-1 in their Telkom Knockout quarterfinal.
The goalkeeper had in recent months become a Bafana Bafana regular in the absence first choice goalkeeper and Captain Itumeleng Khume. He has played four matches in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers and he was yet to concede a goal.
Meyiwa’s death becomes the second death of a South African sports personality in just days, after Olympic medalist, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi died in an auto crash on Friday.
