Court Orders Suspension Of SABC’s COO

Communications Minister Reportedly Says SABC COO Cleared Of All Allegations
VENTURES AFRICA – The Western Cape High Court has directed that Hlaudi Motsoeneng, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the South African Broadcasting Cooperation (SABC) be suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.
“The disciplinary (hearing) has to happen within 60 days … and has to be headed up by an independent person,” Sapa quoted DA MP, Gavin Davis, as having said.
The DA had started a high court effort to have Motsoeneng’s promotion as COO be put aside a couple of months back. The DA’s application paid more
attention to the “unlawful” process the SABC board followed in its recommendation of Motsoeneng’s appointment, the rationality employed in the decision, and the findings of Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela’s report, according to Fin24.
In February, Madonsela released her report, which found his salary increased from R1.5 million ($136.725) to R2.4 million ($218.760 in one year.
Madonsela recommended that a new COO be appointed at the SABC within 90 days.
The Western Cape High Court order comes at a time when the Chairman of SABC, Zandile Tshabalala, is also facing problems as the Parliamentary Communications Committee has asked her to produce her qualifications or resign for the board of Africa’s biggest broadcaster. She has failed to do so and has instead hired a high-profile lawyer to tackle this matter.
Tshabalala claimed that she holds a commerce degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA). However, the university has claimed that it does not have her records.
On Friday morning, it emerged that she claimed that her certificates had been stolen in house breaking incident at her house in Johannesburg.
