Williams Gets Apology From Russian Tennis Chief, AP Says

Serena Williams has received a written apology from Russian tennis federation president Shamil Tarpischev after he insulted the top-ranked American and her sister Venus, the Associated Press reported.
Tarpischev, also a member of the International Olympic Committee, was suspended from any tour involvement for one year and fined the maximum $25,000 by the women’s WTA tour on Oct. 19 after he referred to them as the “Williams brothers” on a Russian talk show earlier this month.
Tarpischev “has reached out to apologize to both myself and my sister,” the AP quoted Serena Williams as saying today at the season-ending WTA Championships in Singapore. She said she hasn’t spoken to him.
Tarpischev said earlier the comments were taken out of context in a statement through the Russian tennis federation.
