A 23-year-old man was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service after jumping over the White House fence today as authorities were on heightened alert after shootings at Canada’s Parliament.
Uniformed Secret Service officers used dogs to subdue the man before he could reach the executive mansion, said Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the agency. A similar episode a month ago, in which a man vaulted the fence and entered the White House, helped lead to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson.
The incident began about 7:16 p.m. in Washington, Donovan said. The man, identified as Dominic Adesanya, of Bel Air, Maryland, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He was unarmed at the time of the attack, Donovan said.
Video footage captured by news organizations showed the
man, wearing shorts, on the grass of the White House’s North Lawn. He kicked a police dog who ran at him, and wrestled with a second one before being brought to the ground.
The dogs were taken to a veterinarian for injuries suffered during the incident.
Police and security personnel in Washington are on alert following today’s shootout in the legislature in Ottawa and the slaying of a soldier guarding Canada’s war memorial.
The Secret Service placed an additional barrier in front of the White House fence after 42-year-old Omar Gonzalez cleared the fence and ran into the executive mansion on Sept. 19. It’s not clear how the jumper today was able to clear both the barrier and the fence.
