VENTURES AFRICA – Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi have been named the 2014 winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The prize makes 17-year-old Malala, the youngest Nobel laureate ever.
Malala, the Pakistani school girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban, and Kailash, an Indian children’s rights activist jointly won the award from an elite list of 278 nominees, including Pope Francis and Edward Snowden.
Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Thorbjørn Jagland, made the announcement in Oslo, Norway on Friday.
Although she was tipped to win in 2013, Malala had to wait till 2014, becoming the youngest ever Nobel laureate.
Malala took her passion for girl-child education to Africa in July to advocate for millions of out-of-school girls.
“I came to Africa to raise awareness about the
58 million children not in primary school who face numerous barriers to education,” she said.
“I was particularly inspired to meet young girls in Kenya who are so passionate about getting an education, building their future and the future of their country.”
She also visited Nigeria to show solidarity in he country’s search of school girls abducted by terror group, Boko Haram.
