o New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was fined $12,000 by the National Football League for yelling an obscenity at a fan last weekend, NFL spokesman Jon Zimmer said in an e-mail.
Smith, 23, was videotaped cursing at a fan following the team’s 24-17 loss to the Detroit Lions at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 28. The Jets have lost three straight games and are in last place in the American Football Conference’s East division.
Smith said this week that he knew he was facing a league punishment. He didn’t disclose what the fan said to prompt his reaction.
“Whatever the ramifications will be, I will accept it,” he said.
Smith has completed 60.3 percent of his passes this season for 922 yards and four touchdowns. His five interceptions are tied for the mst in the NFL and his 75.1 passer rating is the second lowest among quarterbacks with more than 100 pass attempts. Jets coach Rex Ryan said yesterday that Smith could face additional discipline from the team.
“We’ve had discussions,” Ryan told reporters. “I know it was being lobbied about.”
Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was also fined $12,000 for flashing his middle finger during a preseason game.
The Jets play tomorrow at the San Diego Chargers.
