Mining in South Africa
VENTURES AFRICA – JSE-listed platinum miner, Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat), on Monday said it had halted all underground operations at the Styldrift 1 Project pending a full probe into the death of a miner there at the weekend.
It said the probe into the death of the miner had already started and is being conducted in collaboration with the department of mineral resources (DMR).
RBPlat identified the dead miner as Xadreque Chihungo, a Shaft Sinkers contractor employee at its Styldrift I Project.
Chihungo was employed as a Stage Hand and got fatally injured in
a shaft related incident that occurred on the 4th of October.
These incidents are not rare in the South African mining industry. Last month, a gold miner was killed in a tramming accident at Harmony Gold’s Tshepong mine near Welkom in the Free State Province.
This came shortly after operations at Harmony’ Doornkop mine came to a halt earlier this year when nine mine workers were killed in a fire and a rock fall a month before.
Work at the mine came to halt after underground fire broke out following a seismic event there, which led to the death of the nine workers. Eight other workers were rescued.
Operations resumed after South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) lifted the work stoppage it imposed at the mines.
