Mariah Carey may have just confirmed the reason behind her split from her husband of six years, Nick Cannon. While in Tokyo for her “The Elusive Chanteuse Show,” Carey reportedly changed some choice lyrics to: “I know you cheated, mother******.”
TMZ reported the 44-year-old superstar covered the popular Billie Holiday song, “Don’t Explain,” during the first stop on her world tour. For those unfamiliar with the Billie Holiday song, the late singer wrote it about her then-husband, Jimmy Monroe. According to Holiday’s 1956 autobiography, “Lady Sings the Blues,” she was inspired to write the song after
Jimmy came home one night with lipstick on his shirt collar. The 1945 song is an interesting choice for a Carey cover -- specifically because of her recent divorce drama with Nick Cannon.
Holiday’s lyrics already mention cheating and lipstick; however, audio obtained by TMZ makes it sound as if Carey changed one line of the song to, “I know you cheated, mother******.”
While Cannon initially denied infidelity claims as the root of their divorce, rumors began circulating that Carey had hired “spies” to follow her husband during tapings of “America’s Got Talent.” The mom of two was allegedly worried Cannon would cheat with one of the models who worked on the reality competition show.
“Nick’s phone would blow up from Mariah texting and calling, and he would turn it off. He was tremendously embarrassed by it,” a source told Radar Online. “Nick told friends that Mariah would get angry when he wouldn’t return calls, and sent assistants to see what he was doing.”
